Tongue Ties Affect Speech

The attached article discusses delayed speech in children. So many of the symptoms they identify can be caused by an undiagnosed tongue tie. In the case of the child in the article, a tongue tie was not discovered until he was 10 years old. So many years of effort spent fighting a mechanical attachment to the floor of his mouth that could have been corrected in infancy.

The article lists the following items to watch for -- ones that could be caused by a tongue I have highlighted:

Language delay

Articulation delay

Tongue tie

Voice disorders

Stuttering

Apraxia (child cannot purposefully imitate a sound)

Autism

Hearing issues

Feeding difficulties

Tongue thrust

Sleeping disorders, including snoring

Dyslexia (reading disorders)

Brain injury

All the best,

Leslie Haller
